Last year the ships transited the canal carrying 822.3 million tons of goods, with an increase of 9% compared to 754.5 million tons in 2013. The goods loaded on ships in transit in the north-south direction were equal to 416 million tonnes (+7.3%), and those on board the ships that crossed the Channel from south to north amounted to 406.3 million tonnes (+10.8%).
In 2014 the Suez Canal was crossed by a total of 17,148 ships, with an increase of 3.3% compared to 16,596 ships in the previous year. The only tankers were 4,053 (+12.8%) and the other ships were 13,095 (+0.7%).
