The cruise sector: results of an analysis of flows and the impact on competitiveness in Naples’ port system

During the 2017, the Naples’s cruise passenger flows have dropped almost 29%. The decline is impressive despite the Italian ports expected slump and the touristic positive trend in Naples. In order to detecting explanatory features about this spread, we have reviewed some studies on cruise shipping. Thereby, we observe unexpected negative spillovers concerning touristic movements and carry out a short analysis of remarkable views in the Mediterranean cruise market. Furthermore, we suggest explanatory instruments both on the supply side and on the demand side. In addition, we realized that conflicting and cooperative cruise flows are able to anticipate the decline in the port of Naples.  Consequently, structural and geo-economic properties may explain the flow’s decrease.  We also have stated a function model with a residual accounting 0.001% on the 2017 Naples’s cruise pax flow. Finally, we have highlighted the role of the currency with a macroeconomic transport approach.
