Port of Rotterdam Authority published the Top 20 European container ports. The hub of the entire container segment at the European level is the port of Rotterdam, which handled 11.6 million TEUs in 2013 confirming its leadership.
The trade volumes rose in many ports, such as Piraeus (+15.7%). Among Spanish ports, that are in direct competition with Italian ports, the sole variation was Algeciras (+5.6%) that surpasses even Valencia as the leading port of the country with a container trade accounting for over 4.3 million TEUs. The German ports of Hamburg and Bremen combined exceeded 15 million TEUs handled in 2013.
As many as three Italian names rank among the top European ports: Gioia Tauro, Genoa and La Spezia. In particular Gioia Tauro features an increase (+13.5%).
