According to Alphaliner data, global container port throughput grew by an estimated 6.7% in the first six months of 2017 and growth is on track to hit over 6% for the full year to reach a six-year high in its strongest showing since 2011.
Positive growth was recorded across all regions in the first six months of the year, led by Chinese ports that recorded the strongest growth rate of 9.3%. The top 15 European ports with an overall progress of 3.7%, are performing much better than in 2016 (+2.1%) and 2015 (-1.6%). Rotterdam confirms the largest port in Europe and its container throughput increased by 9.3% to 6.7 million TEUs. Among the top European ports, notable gainers in the first half include Barcelona (27% to 1.4 million TEUs) and Genoa (13% to 1.3 million TEUs).
Among the Southern Mediterranean ports, the highest growths are posted by Tanger Med to 11% (1.6 million TEUs) and East Port Said to 9% (1.4 million TEUs).
