On 8th and 9th of November, SRM was again in Asia to participate at the 2nd Global Shipping Think Tank Alliance Plenary Meeting held at the Korea Maritime Institute in Seoul and promoted by SISI – Shanghai International Shipping Institute, one of the most important Chinese research center on port, shipping and logistics services.
The event was promoted under the cooperation agreement called the Global Shipping Think Tank Alliance involving the most prestigious research institutes on the maritime economy of China, Japan, the United States, Singapore, South Korea, Germany and the United Kingdom and which was signed last year by SRM.
The Meeting organized by the Alliance are aimed at studying, deepening, and collating research centers on key issues and topics relating to the global economy and the shipping industry.
The focus of this year was on two themes: Forecasting demand and Supply of the global container shipping and Economic effect by the enlargement of the ship size and strategies of shipping companies and port. Though “demand & supply” is not a new topic, which always ranks high on the list for market analysis and has a constant effect on market fluctuations, it could be studied in new background. Besides, the trend of ship size enlargement is becoming much clearer. It brings profits to the ship owners, but also labile factors.
In representation of SRM were Dr Arianna Buonfanti and Dr Dario Ruggiero, which have presented on the second day two reports, the first titled “Global container shipping scenario and the new centrality of the Mediterranean: key trends“, and the second titled “The Effects of Increasing Ship Size on the Mediterranean Economy” in which the key topics were faced with a Mediterranean perspective.
