This new issue of our newsletter marks the continuation of the collaboration between the Research Centre of the Naples Port Authority and SRM. The newsletter analyses the port of Naples’ connections with the ports of the Southern Rim of the Mediterranean, as part of an assessment of Italian maritime trade with the countries of the Mediterranean. To round up the analysis, an interview to the Secretary General of the port of Naples, Emilio Squillante, offers a realistic picture of port activity in Naples, and the strategies the Authority is pursuing to become an increasingly integral part of the Mediterranean economy.

The result of a survey on Italian manufacturing companies
Edited by SRM and Contship Italia Group, the Report is an analysis on logistics corridors efficiency for containerized cargo, seen by the eyes of manufacturing industries from the three main Italian exporting regions: Lombardia, Emilia Romagna and Veneto“. The Report is available in Italian and English version.
The study offers a quantitative analysis, with two ambitions. 1) Progressively extend the panel to other Italian regions, to transform the report into a permanent look-out. 2) Simplify the “sentiment” using a new index named QIL2 (quality Logistics Italian Index).

SRM presents the first issue of a report which deals with the economic sentiment of Italian shipping agents and aims at monitoring the dynamics of competitiveness and the economic expectations of the sector. In this issue attention is cast on some central economic themes which are a point from which one could start again to conjecture a future growth in the maritime sector: innovation and competitiveness.

Within the cooperation agreement signed in july, 2011, SRM and Assoporti present a report aiming to analyze – in both economic and territorial point of view- problems and opportunities in the port sector. The report contains data and statistics on Italian freight and passenger traffic in the Mediterranean sea. It also includes a section of in-depth interviews to the main personalities of the port sector, starting- in this issue- from Francesco Nerli, President of Assoporti.

This Sixth Edition of the Maritime Economy Report highlights the socio-economic value of the sector and confirms the development and successes achieved, also indicating the challenges to be faced both in Europe and in the Mediterranean, in this delicate historical phase.
The economy of the sea is a sector which, due to its importance, would require more effective and coherent attention on a political and administrative level. It is necessary to draw up a national policy for the sector and to promote it within Europe.

The report aims to offer an updated snapshot of the logistical opportunities and best practices available for import and export through the logistics corridors of Northern Italy, as well as some significant ideas, capable of guiding strategic choices towards the objectives and the priorities expressed by the market and by the main stakeholders in the logistics sector. The study is based on a sample of 400 manufacturing companies, located in Lombardy, Veneto, and Emilia Romagna, analyzing the logistical preferences related to the use of Italian gateway ports and the methods used to transfer goods to and from the ports, with a focus final on the ceramic district of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The report focuses also on digitalization, sustainability and the Covid-19 impact.
The role of sustainability and district tradition in enhancing the value of Italian manufacturing
The path taken in 2019 by SRM and Contship with the redation of the first study on the perception of the efficiency of logistics corridors, by the manufacturing companies of Lombardy, Emilia Romagna and Veneto, continues.
The main objective of the report remains to provide a clear picture of the performance of logistics systems, as perceived by Italian manufacturing companies trading imports and exports. The ambition is to provide companies, associations, public institutions and logistic operators with data and ideas which might influence their choices, investments and development strategies.
Through this investigation, we try to answer complex and articulated questions, concerning the logistic corridors used by the companies that use containers to transport their goods, analyzing the preferred modes of transport used to reach the port infrastructures from the company headquarters and vice versa, and identifying the Italian ports which these companies prefer to use to receive imports and ship exports.
The new edition integrates the suggestions collected through a series of technical focus groups, composed by shippers and cargo owners. Among the novelties of the latest edition, readers will find a focus on the reasons that determine the logistical choices of companies, a drill down on sustainability and a new section, dedicated to one of the best performing production clusters, in terms of export, the wine district of Conegliano – Valdobbiadene.

This publication is the result of a partnership between SRM and Assoporti. This six-monthly newsletter aims to offer an overview to the operators on the Mediterranean and on the meaning of the port dynamics developing in its wake. And Italy is on the frontlines, striving to achieve a clear and solid development of its ports and of the system connected to them. Analysis and data are corroborated by interviews conducted with the main players of international port systems. In this issue we have: Eamonn O’Reilly (Chief Executive at Dublin Port Company) and Santiago Garcia-Milà (Deputy Director General of Barcelona Port Authority).

This report, carried out by Intesa Sanpaolo, has the objective to analyse the Italian Finance Law 2018 and the quality of the Italian Institutions fom a local and a national point of view. The paper includes also a chapter written by SRM that describes the new instrument of the Special Economic Zones, established by the “Mezzogiorno Decree”.
